What are hybrid golf clubs? are they useful?

Posted by Alfred on

Golfers, and especially beginners, are often confused about hybrids. They aren’t clear about what these clubs do and what they are used for. At first glance, they seem like mixture of features from woods and irons, that are inferior to both these kinds of clubs. There’s some truth in that misconception, but in general, it doesn’t hold up to reality. Hybrids are, in my opinion, one of the best innovations in golf clubs. They are versatile and easier to hit, thus allowing beginner golfers more freedom of action than they ever had before. Because of that, hybrids have been becoming increasingly popular every year, and now, i think most golfers have at least one hybrid club in their bag. They usually call that one club a rescue club, because hybrids have rare ability to rescue golfer from tough situations and spots.

To properly describe hybrids and what they do, we must first examine key characteristics of irons and woods. The latter, are longer golf clubs with larger heads, and their primary use is to make the ball travel a long distance while sacrificing a little bit of accuracy. Irons, on the other hand, are smaller clubs with small heads, but very accurate. What hybrids try to achieve is, taking best features of both of these clubs and combining them into one. For example, irons are notoriously hard to hit, but hybrids are not. Meanwhile, hybrids have more accuracy than woods. They are definitely not as accurate as irons, but considering irons’ difficulty of use, hybrids come out definitely the most superior golf club of the three. At least, that’s how i see it.

Hybrid golf clubs were first created about twenty years ago, by TaylorMade. First versions, as of everything, weren’t the best, but they raised enough interest from the public to motivate TaylorMade into further improving them. Years passed, and other club manufacturers joined the bandwagon, improving hybrids’ design and performance along the way. Now, every beginner knows how capable these clubs are, and carries at least few hybrids in his/her golf bag at all times. In just twenty years, hybrids have become inseparable part of most golfers’ golf bags, and i think that’s so remarkable.

I want to further emphasize other advantages of hybrid, other than being easier to hit. Hybrids are also very good for shooting your ball out of roughs. Roughs are certain terrains on the golf course that are intended to make it hard for golfer to hit the ball. As i’ve mentioned before, because of this feature that hybrids have, they are also called rescue golf clubs.

Beginner golfers love the hybrids, but that doesn’t mean that they’re the only ones frequently using them. Many of my golfer friends, who have years of experience, carry at least one hybrid with them, because of multitude of reasons we’ve covered above. Even professional golfers, playing at the tournaments, are starting to use them now. So that should really give you the idea of how useful these clubs are.

Best types of clubs for beginners

Posted by Alfred on

There are many things about golf that beginners find confusing, but most common of them all are different types of golf clubs. At first sight, it is unclear how are they different and when is the best time to use each one of them. I learned to use my golf clubs properly by playing golf and reflecting on the mistakes i made. Also, it doesn’t hurt to have a friend who is experienced in the ways of golf. If you don’t have such a friend, not everything is lost. You can go to golf instructor and take lessons. You definitely won’t get far without actually playing golf a lot though. In my experience, i’ve found that taking lessons plus practicing the game every day is the best method for learning golf. Enough about that though, let’s get back to discussing different types of golf clubs.

First off, we have woods. These are long clubs with large club heads, which are used to make the ball fly long distances. The longest wood is usually called a driver. It is the golf club you use to make your first shot. Driver’s design is entirely focused on making long shots, while sacrificing a bit of accuracy. There are many types of woods, which differ in how much of accuracy they sacrifice for long distance. There has been lots of improvement in design of woods, but as a general rule of thumb, the more accurate a wood is, the shorter distance covered by it will be.

Irons, on the other hand, are smaller and have smaller clubheads than woods do. Heads are usually filled with material entirely, but some golf club manufacturers do make irons with hollow heads. Irons are very accurate, but the average distance of a golf ball hit by them is much shorter than the woods. Another key characteristic by which i would define irons, is that they are very hard to hit. It takes a lot of practice to learn how to swing iron properly, and even then, bungled shots are common. That’s why a lot of people, especially the beginners, prefer to use hybrids over irons.

TaylorMade made first hybrid in 2002 by incorporating key features of both – woods and irons – into one club. The result was better than expected. Not only hybrids were, and still are much easier to hit than irons, they are also incredibly versatile and useful. Professional golfers often use hybrids to get out of the roughs, which is why they are also called utility clubs, and you can learn more about them here. Because of their usefulness, hybrids have become inseparable part of every golf club bag. Because of them being so easy to hit, in my opinion, hybrids are also the type of club that is best for beginners.

Putters, are golf clubs that are used to shoot golf balls very precisely into the hole, but they aren’t designed for making long distance shots. Because of that, putters are pretty straightforward to figure out. They are also rather inexpensive.

Speaking of expenses, buying each type of club separately also requires good knowledge of their key characteristics. If you’re unsure whether you are familiar enough with these concepts to choose your own golf clubs, i would recommend going for entire club set. Not only are they simpler to buy, some club sets are also very good in quality. Others are affordable but still good. I think the best thing about club sets is that, they don’t require incredible time investment that you’d inevitably have to make if you were to buy clubs one by one.
